Nirvash R Maharaj is a Chartered Accountant, CA(SA), and tax practitioner who completed his articles at Grant Thornton in Umhlanga. Veerasha Maharaj is an accountant with a BCom in Business Management who has managed privately owned businesses.

    Nirvash is a Chartered Accountant, CA(SA), and a tax practitioner. He qualified after completing his articles at Grant Thornton in Umhlanga, and his experience covers manufacturing, commercial, medical and real estate businesses, as well as public and private companies. He reviews the financial statements and tax work that leave the practice, and he's the person to call when SARS writes.

    Veerasha is an accountant with a BCom in Business Management. She has used that training to manage privately owned businesses, organising, planning and analysing their activities, so she understands the owner's side of the desk: cash flow, staff, suppliers and the admin in between.

A CA(SA) is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, bound by its code of professional conduct and continuing education requirements. A registered tax practitioner is registered with both SARS and a recognised controlling body, and anyone can check that registration using SARS's online lookup.

Frequently asked questions

CA(SA) is the professional designation awarded by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). To earn it, a candidate completes a SAICA-accredited accounting degree and a postgraduate qualification, passes SAICA's board exams and completes a registered training programme. CA(SA)s are bound by SAICA's code of professional conduct and must keep up continuing professional development throughout their careers.

In South Africa, anyone who provides tax advice or completes tax returns for others must register as a tax practitioner with both SARS and a Recognised Controlling Body, such as SAICA. This makes them accountable for the standard of their work. You can check whether someone is registered using SARS's online practitioner lookup before you appoint them to handle your tax.
